Millions of years ago, they rose up out of the Tethys Sea: the Dolomites - a majestic limestone massif, over 2.000 m high coral reefs grown deep below the surface of the ancient sea. No wonder the Pale Mountains, as they are called, were declared a UNESCO Worl Heritage site in 2009 - a distinction and also a mandate to protect and preserve this unique mountain region for all mankind.
