Transhumance

In summer, cows, sheep, horses and goats move to where they love it most: to the alpine pastures. The fresh air, the wide meadows and the tasty mountain herbs are the natural habitat of these animals.

When the days get shorter, the air crispier and the meadows lose their beautiful green color, however, it is time for them to return to the valley and to their warm stables.

This special day of return of the cattle is duly celebrated across South Tyrol and also on Alpe di Siusi it is a great event. In German it’s called “Almabtrieb” which translated means transhumance. It is traditionally celebrated between mid-September and mid-October, this year precisely on 3rd of October.

Cattle populate the streets around the Compaccio: approx. 250 cows, sheep, horses and goats gather and are decorated with floral garlands and cowbells to ward off evil spirits. Sheep are even marked with bright colors.
The whole herd is expected around 1pm in the center of Castelrotto where it is welcomed with applause, music, dances and folkloric shows. Due to the current situation, a big celebration will not be organized this year, but, nevertheless, it is worth a visit anyway!
