Nature & Resources - our environmental management

The sea, the sun and the unspoilt landscapes of southern Sicily are part of everyday life at ADLER Sicilia and define the unique character of this place. Living so close to nature also makes us more aware of the resources we use in our daily hotel operations.

That is why we pay close attention to the way we manage energy, water and materials. By monitoring consumption, investing in technical solutions and implementing concrete measures, we can track our progress and continue to improve our operations step by step.

Energy management

Running a modern hotel requires energy, which makes it all the more important for us to keep a close eye on consumption and make targeted use of available technologies.

ADLER Sicilia operates entirely on electricity and does not use gas in its day-to-day hotel operations. The electricity we purchase comes 100% from renewable energy sources.

Heat pumps and heat recovery systems are further elements of our energy concept, allowing available heat to be recovered and reused within the resort’s operations.

Intelligent building management helps regulate lighting, heating and cooling according to actual demand. At the same time, our energy management system continuously records and monitors consumption data, allowing us to track developments and identify further opportunities to optimise energy use.

Water management

In Sicily’s dry climate, water is a particularly valuable resource. We therefore regularly measure and monitor our water consumption and use a combination of systems designed to make targeted use of available water and reuse it wherever possible.

ADLER Sicilia has its own well, approximately 90 metres deep, which contributes to the resort’s water supply. We also collect rainwater, which can be used for selected operational purposes.

A key part of our water management is the resort’s on-site wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater is treated directly on site, and the treated water is subsequently reused, among other purposes, for irrigating the green areas. This helps limit the need for additional freshwater for irrigation.

Water consumption data is also recorded and monitored regularly. This allows us to track developments and identify areas where water use can be further optimised.

Since 2024, we have also provided our guests with microfiltered water. This has replaced a large proportion of the bottled water previously used, significantly reducing the number of bottles required and the associated deliveries.

Waste Management & Circular Thinking

For us, waste prevention starts with the way products are selected, purchased and used in the resort’s day-to-day operations. We therefore take action across different areas – from packaging and consumable items to consistent waste separation and the monitoring of waste volumes.

A key element is systematic waste separation throughout the resort. Different waste streams and recyclable materials are collected separately and disposed of in accordance with applicable requirements. Selected waste streams are also regularly recorded and weighed. This monitoring allows us to track developments and identify areas where waste volumes can be further reduced.

The measures implemented to date have already delivered measurable results: compared with 2023, the amount of waste sent to landfill has been reduced by more than 50%.

We also take concrete action when it comes to products and packaging. Refillable systems are used for our courtesy line, reducing the number of individual product containers required. Slippers are not automatically provided in guest rooms but are available on request. This helps limit the use of disposable and consumable items when they are not actually needed.

When purchasing products, we also consider packaging, material use and opportunities for reuse. Regularly recording waste volumes allows us to continue tracking the impact of these measures over time.

Biodiversity & Conservation

Dunes, Mediterranean vegetation and the nearby Torre Salsa Nature Reserve define the landscape surrounding ADLER Sicilia. This distinctive setting makes biodiversity an important consideration in the way we manage our outdoor areas and engage with the local environment.

When designing and maintaining our green spaces, we take the local vegetation into account and favour plants suited to the region’s climatic conditions. The maintenance of our outdoor areas is planned with consideration for existing vegetation and habitats.

Our commitment also extends beyond the resort. During regular clean-up initiatives, members of our team collect litter along the coastline between Torre Salsa and Dama Bianca. ADLER Sicilia also supports the FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano as a Corporate Golden Donor, contributing to its work to preserve Italy’s natural and cultural heritage.

Through these concrete actions, we aim to contribute to the care of the distinctive natural and cultural landscape surrounding ADLER Sicilia.
