ADLER for Planet

A stronger commitment for nature

During your last holiday at ADLER you might have noticed a few changes. Mineral water bottles have been replaced by micro-filtered spring water in refillable bottles. Disposable bath slippers are still available on request, but no longer provided by default, and our menus increasingly feature zero-km products, many of which grow directly in our organic vegetable gardens. All these adjustments are part of a global vision that is deeply rooted in ADLER’s DNA – a vision that is now taking shape under ADLER for Planet.

As the name suggests, the ADLER for Planet initiative is designed to shift all our decision-making processes towards the adoption of sustainable practices, such as using resources considerately, protecting the natural landscapes surrounding our facilities and developing our business in a socially and environmentally conscious way.
When the ADLER for Planet initiative kicked off in 2023, we also decided to join the Earth Check certification programme. This choice was driven not by the desire to attain written recognition, but to ensure that we are taking the right steps towards sustainability, continuously upgrading and optimising our strategies. Like all Earth Check affiliates, our hotels must meet over 300 strict sustainability criteria. Compliance with the required standards is checked and assessed regularly by independent experts, and we are guided on our path to certification by Terra Institute consultants.

The first external audits are already underway at the various ADLER Spa Resorts & Lodges, and we are confident in a positive outcome based on the preliminary assessments confirming that we are indeed on the right track towards a greener future and a fairer world.
The following is an overview of how we are implementing GSTC sustainability standards across all areas at ADLER Resorts & Lodges.

Communication goes paper-free
The wooden cube provided in your guestroom is more than just for decoration. By scanning the QR code on the cube, you can access our Guestnet and a wealth of useful information, reserve your spa treatment directly from your device, communicate with our housekeeping and room service departments and much more. You can also find out how you can participate in the ADLER for Planet project and make your stay more sustainable – you can make a real difference!

From disposable to refillable
With the aim of further reducing our environmental footprint, we now provide guestrooms with toiletries in refillable aluminium dispensers. This translates into an 80% reduction in plastic waste.
Disposable spa slippers were another major source of waste, and are now provided on request only.
To reduce glass consumption, we now provide complimentary micro-filtered water in refillable bottles. From a general perspective, we now prioritise eco-friendly packaging and avoid one-way products wherever possible.

No environmentally harmful chemicals
Whether it’s in the guestrooms, public areas or laundries, we use exclusively cleaning products that are Eco-friendly certified. In tending to our gardens and green areas, we also strictly avoid any insecticides, pesticides and other polluting chemicals.

Focusing on green energy
We are increasingly investing in renewable energy sources. Projects for energy self-sufficiency are currently being implemented at our facilities in Tuscany and Sicily. By introducing photovoltaic systems, heat pumps and efficient consumption monitoring systems, we expect to reduce our requirements for public-grid energy by 95%.
Water: a valuable but finite resource
All our facilities are equipped with smart water management systems. We use advanced water-saving technologies both in the guestrooms and in the pool and spa areas. Additionally, ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA has its own water treatment plant for collecting wastewater and using it to irrigate the hotel’s gardens and green areas.

Responsible waste management

We separate waste across all departments, as well as training our staff in this respect, and raising awareness about waste reduction and responsible use of resources.

Protecting landscapes and biodiversity
As well as working with local public and private entities, we organise independent initiatives to help preserve the natural ecosystems in the areas surrounding our hotels. The staff at ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA are regularly engaged in cleaning the WWF-protected coastline within the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve. In their effort, they are supported not only by the local population and institutions, but by many of our guests as well.
As a golden member of FAI (the Italian national trust), our resort in Sicily actively contributes to caring for and protecting the Kolymbethra gardens, a green oasis set within the Valley of Temples archaeological site.
As for our hotels in South Tyrol, we contribute by sponsoring the creation of footpaths, promoting reforestation programmes and supporting local forestry authorities in containing bark beetle infestation.
At ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE, we contribute to maintaining the footpaths in the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia valley, including signposting maintenance.

Our social and cultural engagement
We firmly believe that every company has a responsibility towards the community, on both a local and a larger scale. This is why we support a variety of cultural, social and outreach projects and initiatives. For example, we hold music and cultural events at our Tenuta Sanoner winery in Tuscany, where locals are welcome to participate. We also support the Locia day centre in Ortisei, which is dedicated to helping people with disabilities, and all the proceeds from our New Year lotteries are donated to non-profit associations such as Medici dell’Alto Adige per il Mondo (South Tyrolean Doctors for the World).

Caring for the welfare of our staff
By offering a wide range of job opportunities, ADLER contributes to local development and the well-being of local communities. We set great store by building lasting working relationships, which we foster by offering employees several benefits, regular training programmes and dedicated special events. Additionally, we offer funding for crèches and nursery schools, thereby promoting a healthy work-life balance for mothers and fathers.

Spending a holiday at our Spa Resorts & Lodges will be an opportunity to not only enjoy unspoilt nature, pure air and crystal-clear waters, but also to actively contribute to protecting the environment. Become part of our vision for a more sustainable future!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for supporting ADLER for Planet!
