Taking concrete action: the EarthCheck certification

Our certification journey

Protecting nature and sustainability has always been the cornerstone of our philosophy.
In 2023, we decided to further intensify our efforts for environmental protection and apply for the EarthCheck certification to achieve GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) recognition for our resorts.
The EarthCheck certification is a way for us to consolidate and attest to our commitment towards a more sustainable and responsible approach to the future, and to share this opportunity for ongoing improvement with our guests, staff and business partners.

Our objectives go beyond eco-friendly architectural designs and waste recycling to embrace projects that promote biological and cultural diversity, as well as the sustainable development of our surrounding areas. At the core of this commitment is social responsibility – a value that has been deeply rooted in ADLER’s DNA since its very inception, and that is also reflected in the care the Sanoner family devote to their employees’ well-being and quality of life.

Becoming EarthCheck-certified entails going through a rigorously structured multi-step process:

Engagement and commitment
Defining objectives: ADLER Spa Resorts & Lodges has clearly defined sustainability goals and commits to the certification standards.
Building a Green Team: A dedicated team is put together, trained and informed about the EarthCheck certification criteria, which are based on GSTC standards.

Benchmarking

Internal audit: An internal audit is performed to assess the sustainability practices currently in place and identify any areas for improvement.
Data collection: Detailed operational data is collected regarding our resorts’ environmental, social and economic impact.

Improvement
Planning of measures: Based on the initial assessment, an action plan is developed to improve sustainability across the 10 key performance areas.
Implementation: The plan is implemented. Measures can include improvements in terms of waste management, use of renewable energy sources, reduction in consumption and awareness-raising among guests and staff.

Monitoring and tracking
Continuous data collection: Data is collected on an ongoing basis to monitor improvements and measure them against our goals.
Reporting: Measures and improvements are reported in detail.

External audit
EarthCheck audit: An independent auditor appointed by EarthCheck conducts an audit to verify that the measures implemented meet the certification requirements based on GSTC criteria and standards.
Correction of non-compliance: Any areas of non-compliance identified during the external audit are addressed and corrected.

Certification
Awarding of certification: If all requirements are met, the EarthCheck certification is awarded as proof of compliance with GSTC criteria and standards.
Upholding and improving standards: Sustainable practices are continuously monitored to maintain certification status, which is subject to regular audits to ensure ongoing compliance.
