FERRAGOSTO at ADLER
A review of 2024’s summer festivity
If you are travelling to Italy around mid-August, you’re bound to hear it: Buon Ferragosto! But what’s the occasion all about, exactly?
Ferragosto is an Italian public holiday celebrated on 15th August. As the main summer festivity, its importance is comparable to that of Christmas and Easter. Just like the other two festivities, it has religious significance, but its origins are much more ancient than Christianity. Ferragosto was introduced in Roman times by Emperor Augustus, hence the original name: Feriae Augusti. It was a period of rest designed to grant the population some respite between the long weeks of hard agricultural work of early summer and the harvesting season. Back then, the celebrations went on for days, and included parades, feasts and horse races. As Christianity took hold, Ferragosto was assimilated and moved to 15th August to make it coincide with the Assumption of Mary.
Nowadays, the Ferragosto holidays provide Italians with the perfect occasion to escape both the daily grind and the summer heat, retreating to the seaside, the mountains or the countryside for a relaxing break with their family or friends.
Ferragosto is one of the main highlights on the calendar at ADLER Spa Resorts & Lodges, too. In keeping with our tradition, this year we celebrated it in style with our guests at all our establishments – with festive menus, specially designed buffets, music and entertainment.
The following is a review of ADLER’s Ferragosto events in 2024.
ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA
We kicked off our Sicilian celebrations with an aperitif in the garden, where wooden fishing boats and nets spread out in the sun set the scene, bringing back the atmosphere of the Sicily of old. The first part of the evening had a distinctly artistic allure, with singing, dancing and acting. After the show, the gala dinner with fish specialities and traditional Sicilian dishes delighted the palates, while relaxing melodies and catchy hits alternated for the perfect musical accompaniment to the event.
ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE
Classical music under the vineyards – a memorable prelude to Ferragosto set in our Tenuta Sanoner winery, where on 13th August we served our guests an apericena (drinks and food) with musical accompaniment by the Salvatore Accardo & Friends ensemble and their excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s works.
The actual Ferragosto celebrations took place at the Resort on 15th August. An aperitif on the terrace was followed by a gourmet dinner under the stars, with seafood crudités, fresh fish and Tuscan specialities. Live music rounded off the experience, which turned out to be a resounding success.
ADLER Spa Resort DOLOMITI
This year for the first time, our Ferragosto aperitif was set in the garden in front of the spa area, where we raised our glasses surrounded by fragrant flowers, romantic lights and cheerful voices. After the traditional gala dinner, we danced to live music until the break of dawn.
On the previous night, we held our customary Ferragosto lottery, with great prizes for our guests. The Sanoner family will double the proceeds from the lottery and donate the amount to South Tyrolean Doctors for the World, to finance their project of building a secondary school in Ethiopia. We would like to seize this opportunity to send out a warm THANK YOU to all the guests who participated for supporting this wonderful initiative.
ADLER Spa Resort BALANCE
True to its mission, ADLER BALANCE offered a well-balanced Ferragosto celebration, not without exciting surprises and fine dining experiences. The evening started with a festive aperitif in an elegant ambience, followed by a gourmet dinner served at the tables and accompanied by atmospheric background music.
ADLER Lodge RITTEN
The Ferragosto celebrations at Lodge RITTEN had the perfect start with a cocktail and flying buffet of regional specialities, oysters and Champagne, served on the panoramic terrace overlooking the Dolomites and accompanied by atmospheric music. Later in the evening, a gala dinner was served under the stars. The South Tyrolean dishes with which we delighted our guests were largely made from fresh ingredients grown in our own vegetable garden.
ADLER Lodge ALPE
Alpe di Siusi provides a sensational backdrop for relaxing on balmy summer nights. On this special occasion, our guests found the terrace stylishly decorated, with a fireplace burning cheerfully, and several fire bowls adding to the enchantment around the meadow just outside. After an al fresco aperitif, a fine gala dinner was served in the restaurant with live musical accompaniment. As always, the warm atmosphere of Lodge ALPE made every guest feel part of our big family.
