The power of thermal waters

at ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE

Spring is an ideal time to dip into the regenerating power of the thermal waters in Bagno Vignoni.

What did the charismatic Lorenzo the Magnificent and St. Catherine of Siena have in common? Like thousands of other people from all walks of life, they too were drawn to the Tuscan town of Bagno Vignoni, and recognised the healing power of its thermal waters.

Now, the same waters flowing at 52 oC from the springs of Bagno Vignoni are channelled directly to ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE. The hotel sits on elevated ground in the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia valley. Clouds of steam rise voluptuously from the panoramic pool against a backdrop of rolling hills, as the warm water gently wraps the body in its soothing caress. But there’s more to the experience than a scenic setting and pleasant warmth – this water is also good for health, with its generous content of calcium, magnesium, sulfate and bicarbonate.

“We get excellent results, especially when treating conditions such as rheumatic diseases, chronic joint pain and inflammation, osteoporosis and various skin complaints, as well as before and after joint surgery,” explains Michele Bianchini. He is one of the two medical doctors ADLER guests can rely on for a tailored treatment programme. Personalised water therapy, for example, can include a daily bath of at least 20 minutes in the hotel’s large outdoor thermal pool, a floating session in the salt grotto, or a Haki Flow session – a special anti-stress treatment held in a travertine stone pool, where the guest lies on their back and the therapist gently pulls them through the warm water in a series of gentle, wavy movements that immediately relax the neck, shoulders and spine, with a liberating effect on the mind. “The hydrostatic pressure that builds up around the body helps to stimulate the lymphatic system. Compared to treatment beds, water allows for more intense physical stretching,” says Harald Kitz, winner of numerous international awards for his HAKI concept. HAKI Flow is about “decompressing, destressing, detoxifying, relaxing and recovering.” Just what it takes for a spring wellness break in southern Tuscany’s most charming valley!
