Its route along extraordinarily beautiful landscapes and expanses of forest is really impressive, ever losing sight of the Dolomites.
From Bolzano to Renon With the development of Alpine tourism in the 19th century, the Renon was recognised as an ideal hiking destination. At the time, however, visiting this place was not for everyone. Only wealthy and aristocratic families could afford the luxury of spending the summer months on the high plateau.
Therefore, during the 'Belle Epoque', the train was built on the Swiss model and is still departing today since August 1907. The route consisted of three stages: the train left from Walterplatz on tracks like those of a tram and continued on a cogwheel track to the Maria Himmelfahrt stop on the high plateau, and then to Collalbo. The aim was to give everyone the chance to reach the mountain. The little train was therefore an immediate success.
The railway section connected Bolzano to Collalbo until 1966, withstanding two world wars. Later, the cog railway was removed and the section to the city centre was replaced by a cable car, renewed in 2009. Today, the three-rope cable car leaves Bolzano every four minutes and offers a fantastic view. Once you reach 1,227 metres, you continue the preserved section of the last narrow-track railway. The little train runs every half hour between Sopra Bolzano and Collalbo, from April to December.
A journey of discovery Taking the little train of Renon is a very special experience and we recommended it to everyone visiting the high plateau. From the stop in the forest near the ADLER Lodge RITTEN you can take the train reaching different starting points for traditional hikes in the area, including the famous earth pyramids, considered among the highest and most beautiful attractions in Europe. Another popular excursion leads to the Plattner Bienenhof in Wolfsgruben, an interesting museum illustrating the life of farmers of the time. It will be a pleasure for us to help you choose the excursion best suited to your needs.
Celebrating the anniversary This year, the railway is celebrating its 115th birthday and
numerous events have been organised, including the 'Bahnl Theatre', 'Bahnl Days' with persons of that time who saw the realization of the project until its result, special rides, guided hikes along the cogwheel track and many other initiatives. All not to miss!
