Autumn wine hikes with Alexander Broll
In autumn 2023, our guests enjoyed a special wine hike around Brixen, accompanied by our hiking guide and sommelier Alexander Broll. Combining nature and South Tyrolean wine culture, the experience led through the vineyards of the Eisacktal valley to a historic winery, where a tasting of selected local wines and a traditional South Tyrolean Brettljause awaited.
Our guests were accompanied by Alexander Broll, our long-time hiking guide and certified sommelier. Alexander’s profound understanding of the world of wine also has very personal roots: his mother comes from a family of winegrowers. Even as a child, he helped out in his grandparents’ vineyard during the school holidays, becoming familiar with the work involved and learning just how much knowledge, dedication and passion go into every glass of wine.
The ideal guide, then, for this special wine hike, which began in Brixen. After a walk through the historic town centre and the winding alleys of Stufels, the route continued through vineyards and orchards towards Neustift. In autumn, the vines glowing in shades of red and yellow created a particularly beautiful display of colour. Along the way, our guests could watch the grape harvest and learn fascinating facts and stories from Alexander about viticulture, winemaking and the terroir of the Eisacktal valley.
At the end of the hike, the group reached the Pacherhof in Neustift, a historic wine estate dating back to the 11th century. There, a hearty South Tyrolean Marende awaited – the perfect way to recharge after the walk. Following a tour of the estate, the experience continued in the renovated wine cellar and tasting rooms, where historic architecture blends seamlessly with contemporary design. It was the perfect setting to taste and savour some of the finest wines of the Eisacktal valley together with winemaker Michael Leimer.

VIBRANT AND FRUITY – THE WINES OF EISACKTAL
Nestled in the northernmost wine-growing region of Italy, the Eisacktal valley boasts a millennium-old winemaking tradition. Evidence of viticulture in this region can be traced back to the 5th century BC. Today, mainly white varieties are cultivated in the valley. The significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, ample sunshine for a mountainous region, and the silicate-rich soils bestow the Eisacktal wines with a distinctive mineral character, ensuring a refreshing and fruity wine experience. Within this region, seven wines bear the coveted “Südtirol Eisacktaler” designation of origin: Sylvaner, Kerner, Müller Thurgau, Ruländer, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
