The ADLER Lodge RITTEN is launching a new project: on an area of around 4,000 square metres - just a few steps from the main building - small fields and herb gardens are cultivated. Summer wheat, potatoes, various types of vegetables, small berries, and spicy herbs - all homemade grown. Fresh and close by!
This new project is managed by Christian Fink and his partner Johanna. For some time now, the couple has been running the Viehweiderhof farm, next to our lodge. Both are innovative young farmers. They love working in nature, have a strong ecological imprint, are creative and have clear ideas.
"It will be a typical farm garden," says Christian. "Based on a diverse and environmentally friendly farming. In the garden beds plants will be grown in mixed culture so that they can grow better and protect each other from parasites." "We will add flowers too!" adds Johanna. "Both around and between the beds. Flowers improve the quality of the soil. Moreover they attract bees and other pollinators with their scent and colours. Thanks to the beekeeper Michael Hafner, the bees will find a home behind the underground parking of our lodge and be able to benefit from the nectars. They will surely contribute to the production of honey for our breakfast buffet.
The lodge's farm garden is not only intended as a supply source, but also as a small relaxation oasis for our guests. There will be a pond, small paths, and benches. We want our guests to get emotionally involved in the cultivation of the vegetables served during their meals. Each garden bed will have a descriptive label. However, there is still a long way to go. Johanna and Christian have just finished filling the soil and dividing the beds. Soon they will sow the wheat and plant the different seedlings. "If the weather allows, we plan to harvest the first vegetables in June. Lettuce, beans, rocket and, later, carrots. But it will all depend on the weather forecast," Christian points out. "Continuous rain, cold or too much sun can affect the crop... after all, nature decides. And rightly so.
BY THE WAY: A similar project is taking shape at the ADLER Spa Resort SICILIA, where olive trees, orange groves, vines and herb gardens have been planted between single buildings to provide authentic Mediterranean delights.
