Moonlight Classic – Folk cross-country skiing under full moon on the Alpe di Siusi
Alpe di Siusi, the largest alpine pasture in Europe, is the perfect location for a night cross-country race under the moonlight: the snow glitters under the full moon and immerses the hilly landscape between Sciliar, Plattkofel and Langkofel in a very special light.
The annual event creates a unique atmosphere and invites young and old to spend an unforgettable evening. Cross-country skiing is a wonderful, healthy and at the same time relaxing sport, which offers the opportunity to fully enjoy the spectacular beauty of the landscape.
The cross-country marathon was held for the first time in 2007. This edition was already able to register many participants and visitors. Today, the marathon is one of the classic events in the international cross-country world – framed by a varied entertainment program with alphorn blowers and various live bands.
The 15th South -Tyrolean Moonlight Classic will take place on Friday, February 3, starting at 8 pm in Compatsch. Athletes from all over the world take part in the race, which can be chosen between 15 and 30 km, exclusively in the classic diagonal style. The 30 km long route starts in Compatsch and leads in direction of “Wolfsbühl” to “Ritsch” and from there continues to “Punta d’Oro” in direction of “Palude Grande”, from where it then goes back to the finish line – again in Compatsch. The award ceremony will also take place in the festive tent there.
Among the numerous participants are also former athletes and international top stars of the cross-country skiing scene. Two-time Olympic champion Justyna Kowalczyk from Poland has registered for this year's 15th edition. Tord Gjerdalen and Petter Northug will also be at the start.
This meeting place of the international cross-country elite is the highlight for all cross-country enthusiasts. Whether passionate cross-country skiers or newcomers to cross-country trails, here in the paradise of Alpe di Siusi, everyone will definitely find satisfaction.
