Wonderful Views, Creative Places

Hiking Tour with a Visit to Gregor Prugger’s Atelier

How is a work of art born? And where do ideas, visions, and initial sketches transform into true artistic expressions capable of evoking emotion and wonder? To find out, we embark on a journey that blends nature and creativity.

The starting point is the ADLER Spa Resort DOLOMITI. After an exciting e-bike ride—or a pleasant hike on foot—we reach a sunny clearing with breathtaking views over the entire Val Gardena. Here in Pilat, an unspoiled natural setting above Ortisei, Gregor Prugger spends the summer months with his wife Lidia in a traditional farmhouse, next to a large barn that has been converted into an impressive atelier. Gregor Prugger is considered one of South Tyrol’s most important contemporary artists. His works have been exhibited in numerous cities, both in Italy and abroad, in prestigious art galleries as well as public spaces in the form of monumental installations. As an artist, he has seen the world—but it is here, in this enchanting place, that he finds his true inspiration: in nature, in silence, in the simplicity of life on the farm.

We are welcomed with a delicious snack prepared by Lidia Prugger. Local delicacies, elderflower and fresh mint juices, and a sparkling glass of prosecco make this a special moment of hospitality. After this delightful break, we step into the atelier: a spacious and inviting environment that has retained much of the original structure of the old barn. Here, we can admire an astonishing variety of artworks from different phases of the artist’s creative journey. Sculptures, installations, and wall pieces—mostly made from wood and stone—reflect Gregor Prugger’s boundless creativity and his constant desire to experiment. The harmonious fusion between natural elements and artistic intervention gives rise to ever-changing, fascinating expressions. Visitors have the chance to interact with the artist, ask questions, and gain deeper insight into his creative process. With great openness, Gregor explains techniques, intentions, and the personal meaning behind his works—so engagingly that you could listen for hours without noticing the time pass…

After the visit to this extraordinary place, we begin our return to Ortisei, once again enjoying unforgettable views of the Sella Group and the Cir Peaks, rising majestically on the horizon—true masterpieces of nature, shaped over millions of years. A perfect conclusion to an experience rich in impressions, emotions, and beauty.

The artist

Gregor Prugger was born in 1954 in Ortisei, where he discovered his passion for sculpture at an early age. His first training took place in his father’s studio, who introduced him to the traditional art of wood carving. To refine his artistic skills, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. After completing his academic path, he joined the Arte Visive artist collective in Bolzano. Over the years, he took part in numerous exhibitions, establishing himself as an eclectic artist, always open to new challenges and experimentation. His works have been exhibited in Milan, Florence, Zurich, Stuttgart, The Hague, and Edwards, Colorado, among others. One of his most significant pieces is the monumental installation “L’albero dei Tutti”, dedicated to the victims of organized crime, exhibited in Palermo, Rome, Taranto, Trieste, Bolzano, and many other Italian cities.
